WHALE WATCHING CLASSIC
9:00
For this tour we were very happy to see that we an amazingly flat ocean, making the ride extremely beautiful and picturesque, as the mountains Esja and Akrafjall were being kissed by the sun, showing their maximum splendor. And for the whales it was pretty amazing also! We had just passed the little islands by the harbour and right away we started spotting minke whales all around us. We stayed there for a long while, observing these beautiful creatures. After a while we decided to continue our search and see if we could spot any other species. On the way to what we call the feeding grounds (where the whales, birds and fish gather to feed) we also encountered a pod of harbour porpoises. We usually do not stop for them because they are really shy, but today the sea was so beautiful that we did decide to slow the boat down to observe these little creature for a few minutes. At the feeding grounds we made a new encounter, a pod of white-beaked dolphins. They were also in a very relaxed mood, but that doesn’t mean that as soon as they saw us they didn’t come to pay a visit to the Andrea boat and say hello. We hung with them and enjoyed their company until it was time to head back to Reykjavik. And on the way back the wonders didn’t stop as we continued to spot more and more mine whales!

For this last tour the sun continued shining with no clouds in the sky and the sea was mirror flat. The activity of birds, which we usually look out for when searching for whales, had majorly decreased but we still saw a few puffins flying around and a small flock of majestic Arctic terns! After a while searching in the feeding grounds we encountered a pod of white-beaked dolphins that where taking an evening stroll, enjoying the beautiful weather. One of the youngsters of the pod, got excited when it saw us and started jumping out of the water, giving us a lovely show.

The ocean being incredible flat today and sunshine all over the south coast in Iceland, we started off for our first tour. Whilst heading out towards the feeding grounds, plenty of seabird such as puffins and northern fulmars accompanied us, so that we could even see their reflection on the water surface – beautiful. Getting everyone on the same page to spot whales and dolphins applying the 3 B’s of whale watching, we spotted our first species. A pod of white-beaked dolphins appeared on the horizon. Heading closer we could eventually hear them even breathing. An incredible experience on a flawless day as today. Being still on watch we shall get lucky and a second species appeared. A minke whale started surfacing a couple times close to the boat, giving everyone an impression how fast these animals can actually travel. As we turned the boat towards Reykjavík an even more playful pod of dolphins started jumping right in front, leaving everyone speechless and happy behind on board.

Getting the catamaran Lilja ready to sail, Iceland’s largest bay called Faxafloi was waiting for us. Whilst filling all passengers in on how to spot whales using the 3 B’s including birds, blows and bodies, the first puffins and Arctic terns became visible on the ocean surface. Both bird species stay in Iceland for some time on their migration route. Being on watch the first dorsal fin appeared close to a flock of birds, belonging to a minke whale. As this whale species travels quite fast, we all could get a glimpse of it, as the minke surfaced a couple times before diving down. We continued our ocean adventure on this sunny day and soon after spotted some more black dorsal fins, indicating a pod of white-beaked dolphins. The entire pod seemed to be really relaxed, enjoying the sunshine as much as we did on the boat.

This morning it was an absolute pleasure to go out to the bay of Faxaflói. The sea was perfectly calm and like a mirror. In addition we had perfect sunshine and warm temperatures. Thanks to the speed of our boat Dagmar, it did not take long before we reached the feeding grounds. And that was full of life! We had plenty of minke whalesaround. But there was also a very, very playful pod of white-beaked dolphins that we could hang out with for a while!

The sea was still amazing and we were super excited to go back out and see what we can find. The first sighting was actually a pod of white beaked dolphins. But it was not the only sighting of the day. After playing with this pod, we found another pod of toothed whales: harbour porpoises. They are very hard to spot because they are so tiny. In my opinion, it makes them just more adorable! Soon we headed further to spend some very nice time with minke whales. Three species in one tour! An amazing day!

The waves were a bit higher now, making the spotting very hard. Despite our collective effort we could not spot any whales on this tour. We will allow all guests of this tour, to come again on one of our bigger ships for free.
