This morning the ocean was flat like a mirror and we had a beautiful silver-ish colour all around is. Since the fog was still covering some parts of our view we started sailing out keeping an eye peeled close to the water surface to detect any kind of movement around us. Soon some flocks of seabirds became visible, and all of a sudden within the flock of birds a minke whale surfaced on its search for food. We got very lucky and the individual surfaced around 5 times close to the boat so that we all could even hear it breathing. While continuing our ride, we spotted some massive blows far ahead and instantly knew this must be humpback whales. 3 humpback whales appeared around the boat, and especially one individual got very curious checking passengers out at the bow of the ship. What a great morning for everyone – Annika Heimrich

Leaving Reykjavik’s old harbour again, we started straight towards the area far out, where we got lucky with lots of whales the last couple days. On our way all passengers got introduced to the 3B’s of whale watching, hence everyone was on a lookout for birds, bodies and blows. It took us around an hour of sailing until we spotted a massive flock of birds scattering over the area. Within the flock blows appeared, indicating the presence of at least 3 humpback whales. What a great finding! Getting closer we saw that all 3 individuals were lung feeding, constantly coming up with an open mouth, filtering small sandeel out of the upper water layers. Also at least two minke whales tried to enter the area but vanished after a couple of minutes again. We could observe the humpbacks feeding over 30min all around us, and we all were left speechless behind. What an unforgettable afternoon this was. – Annika Heimrich
