Surrounded By Whales On A Beautiful Day

WHALE WATCHING CLASSIC

09:00

The Ocean calm as a mirror and beautiful sunny weather. A perfect day to spend on the ocean. While sailing out towards the feeding grounds, we spotted numerous flock of birds feeding all around us. Also loads of puffins made their way out here, passing along the boat and were a delight to observe. Soon after reaching the feeding grounds we spotted the first dorsal fins appearing all around us. Numerous minke whales were in the area, all likely on their search for food within these morning hours. While observing the minkes as they surfaced wherever we were looking, we also spotted another activity. Two shy harbour porpoises showed up for a split of a second and then a big blow appeared on our side and then a large, black back surfaced in the glare of sun. A humpback whale had also entered the area. We observed the humpback whale for a while, before heading towards a massive flock of seabirds a bit further out. Arriving at the feast, we all should get very surprised as 3 humpback whales started to roll around in the upper water layers, surfacing belly up, lifting their pectoral flippers over and over again. What a sight! One humpback surfaced so close, that passengers on the lower deck got sprayed on by water vapour as the whale exhaled. A fantastic morning!

We set sail another time this day, leaving towards the feeding grounds in Faxafloi. Keeping the eyes open for some activity to spot from far ahead, we soon could see some big blows coming up a bit in the distance. Two or three humpback whales were hunting some food, circling around the same spot. While getting closer, we suddenly could see some smaller dorsal fins surfacing and 3 white-beaked dolphins were searching for food with one of the humpback whales. As this was not enough wherever we looked a bit further in the distance numerous minke whales could be spotted all around. As this species travels quite fast, we could spot the individuals just for a split of a second, but we all got plenty to see of this species. At the end of the tour one humpback started even lunge feeding within a big flock of birds. What an incredible tour.
