Four Species In One Day

Unfortunately Andrea had to turn around due to a medical emergency on our first tour of the day, so we were unable to travel out to see our whale friends! Our passengers were offered the chance to reschedule since our tour was cut short.

When we sailed out for our afternoon tour on Andrea it was raining and the sky was grey. Everyone was putting on our warm overalls and getting ready for the uninviting weather. Luckily, as soon as we left the harbour it was clearing up and then the sun even came out! This was very motivating and we were all eagerly looking out for our three B’s of whale watching: Bodies, Blows and Birds. As we reached the feeding ground we started spotting minke whales right away. They were all around us, practically wherever we looked we saw one surfacing at distances of less than 100 metres, at lest three times before they went for a deeper dive. Passengers were very happy to be able to see the whales in all the directions, especially because we had an almost full boat, meaning there was a lot of them on the outer deck looking out for these beauties. And, while we were looking at the minkes, we also spotted 2 harbour porpoises which very picturesquely swam towards the sun. After a short while, we saw some splashes at the distance. As we sailed closer to see what it was, we were amazed to meet the very friendly pod of the 5 white beaked dolphins with their two juveniles. The dolphins are our captains favorite, as they always put everybody in a good mood especially when there is two nice juveniles that constantly jump out of the water as soon as a boat approaches them. We then received a call from our sister boat, Lilja, that a humpback was spotted closer to Reykjavik. Therefore, we sailed towards Lilja to have a very nice look and tick off the list the last of the four species that can be spotted here in Faxafloi. We saw it surfacing a couple times before showing its fluke to us twice.

After the previous tour we had high expectations as we sailed out with our passengers on Andrea. As soon as we entered the feeding grounds of Faxafloi, a passenger pointed out a flock of birds further into the distance. We sailed towards the flock and once again the birds did not fail us as we spotted two Minke whales feeding there with the birds. It was a very nice look however we did not go very close as we were informed of the nice pod of dolphins seen on the previous tour were nearby. When we reached the area where they were last spotted however, we did not find them…but just out of nowhere we saw the very big blow of a humpback about 200 metres away! As we sailed towards it we very nicely saw its fluke as it went for a deeper dive. We waited for a while however it seemed as if it went for a long one. We therefore moved to see if we could find it somewhere else and w instead we were very happily surprised by the friendly white beaked dolphins with the two calves that came close to the boat and jumped for us a few times 🙂 On the way back to the old harbour we sailed towards two flocks of birds and in one of them we were nicely surprised first by the distinct smell of a minke whale and then the creature itself, surfacing very close to the boat! Everybody was happy to have seen these beautiful creatures especially with such amazing weather conditions
