As we sailed out to faxafloi this morning we were happy to see that the ocean was as flat as a pool! Even though it was cloudy and we could see some rain further into the distance, the visibility in the horizon was good. After a little while of search we encountered the very nice pod of 5 White beaked dolphins. They were very relaxed and swam parallel to us for a little while. Soon they woke up and a couple of them started showing off by jumping repeatedly out of the water, giving us a pretty amazing show. Unfortunately, we were not so lucky with spotting anything else. On our way back our guide saw a Minke whale however, all passengers were sitting inside so they did not come out in time to see it as it went for a deep dive.

Another beautifully flat and calm day out in the bay. We sailed from Reykjavik out towards our whale watching area and even on the way out we spotted a pod of our white beaked dolphins. Deciding to not stay with these dolphins we continued out to the feeding grounds. Out there we spotted more dolphins which stayed with us for a long time, swimming underneath the boat, jumping and fishing right next to us. Feeding is always a spectacular behaviour to watch. A little bit later we came across three minke whales and whilst watching these minke whales we also spotted our third species of the day, a humpback whale! We watched this whale surface many times near us and at one point another minke whale came within 10metres of the front of the boat to have a closer look! Three species and a fantastic whale watching tour from Reykjavik with Special Tours today.

In this second tour we were happy to meet some Minke whales as we had practically not seen any yesterday or during this morning tour! We were almost scared they had left us for some other place. So when we set sail to Faxafloi first of all we were very happy that the sky had cleared and that the sea conditions were still excellent. Soon, we spotted our first minke which went for a deep dive after it surfaced a couple times. We waited there for it to come out of the water again and it was an excellent idea as after less than 10 minutes it surfaced once again extremely close to the boat. We were able to hear it and see very well the two humps of its blowholes. While we were following this minke we also saw another one surface slightly further. On our way back we encountered other two minkes which surfaced reasonably close to us, allowing all of the passengers to have a good look at these beautiful creatures.

As we sailed out to faxafloi we were surprised by a very cute rainbow over the island of Akurey. People were very motivated to see whales and they were outside with the guide for the whole trip. When we arrived in the usual feeding grounds we made a nice encounter with the pod of 7 dolphins. During this tour they were a lot more lively and the two juveniles started jumping out of the water, giving the passengers an amazing show just like they know how to do it! We were with the dolphins for a long while until they became tired of jumping and decided that it was time for them to swim away. We then sailed off to look for some larger cetacean however, despite the effort of all the passengers as well as all the crew members we were not able to spot anything else. Nonetheless everybody was still very interested in all the whale facts and in the bones and baleen that we have in our cafeteria.
