Sightings: YES! Humpbacks and White-beaked Dolphins
It was quite windy this morning when we sailed out, but it seems that spring is around the corner because it wasn’t a freezing winter wind anymore, which makes it more bearable. Conditions were a little rough when we left and got rougher during the tour. But the hardship was rewarded with lovely sightings of whales. Once again, the whales were next to the town of Akranes, luckily for us since we didn’t have to search for them in the wide ocean in these conditions. We first spotted some white-beaked dolphins. A few of them came straight towards the boat and swam very close to us. Some would leap out of the water some time to time. Then we spotted the blow of a humpback whale right in front of us. We went closer, but it quickly went for a deep dive. It reappeared behind us and as we turned around, we realized there were two of them. We saw them coming to see the surface to breathe and show their dorsal fins one after the other. Humpback whales are most often seen on their own, so having two together was the nicest sighting. After a while, the white-beaked dolphins joined one humpback. They didn’t show themselves so often, but we could admire them together a few times. It was definitely being out at sea this morning before the weather worsened, the whales and dolphins never disappoint!
