Minke Whale and Dolphins spotted Today

10.Nov 2017

We boarded the boat Andrea for the days Whale Watching adventure! It was a beautiful winter afternoon in Reykjavík as we headed out from the Old harbour. We set sail for the feeding grounds of the whales in quite good weather but we were expecting some wind and swells further in Faxaflóibay. It started snowing very lightly as we were heading out which lasted a short while and much to our enjoyment we were greeted by a pod of white-beaked dolphins very early on in the tour. They were at about 5 dolphins in this pod which were acting a little shy but still swimming slow just a few meters from the boat. These toothed- whales swam quite close to the boat until they decided to leave us for now, going for a deeper dive and swimming away. Just a little further into the bay we saw again a pod of white-beaked dolphins could be the same pod. They seemed to be more of them this time, possibly another pod had joined them.We enjoyed their presence for awhile until they picked up speed and dived away from us, we had just begun our tour and headed out further out Faxaflóibay to look for more cetaceans. The wind picked up a little and the waves were a bit deep as we headed further into the feeding grounds but they calmed down in the second half of the tour. After having searched the feedings grounds far and wide we were running out of time and needed to heading back for the harbour. As we were sailing back,a minke whale came up to the surface right in front of us. It arched its back and blew vapour high in to the air, taking a deep breath before going for a deep dive.We waited awhile for it to come back up,preceded to search for it for a bit until we needed to be heading back for the Old harbour. All in all it was a beautiful winter tour after having seen a pod of graceful white-beaked dolphins and then a brief minke whale!
