Another Meeting with a Humpback Whale

15.Feb 2018

It was a sunny winter day as we boarded Andrea for today’s Whale Watching tour. We sailed out from the Old harbour, heading out to the feeding grounds in Faxaflóibay, Kollafjörður was full of bird life and that’s always promising when searching for cetaceans. As we got closer to the feeding grounds we sailed into quite a lot of fog, clouding our visibility for a brief period but sailing further west we sailed out of the mist. Shortly after we were seeing a lot of flocks of seagulls and european shags in the feeding grounds, sailing further south we encountered a humpback whale quite close to us and heading towards the boat. It surfaced four times on our right side, so close it’s size was very visible. It dove for a longer dive, possible feeding and surfaced the second time a bit further from us but blowing vapour very high in the air.
It was a great sunny tour with close encounter of the most common baleen whale in Faxaflói, we look forward in meeting more cetaceans on our next tour.
