Reykjavik Whale Watching Diary 17th August 2014

17.Aug 2014

Tour at 9:00

The sun was shining today and we had a slight breeze of a chilly north wind, but nothing serious.

There were a lot of birds to watch on the way out puffins and Gannets diving right next to Akurey our little Puffin island. We started out finding some White beaked Dolphins who were feeding in a group of at least five and then we found two Minke whales that were playing about in front of the boat.

Wonderful tour this morning! The sun was shining on Faxafloi Bay 🙂 It took us about 35 minutes to find our first Minke Whale and fast we spotted two other Minke Whales. One of them resurfaced less than a meter away from us!! It was crazy, almost touching the boat 🙂 Soon after we spotted two other Minke Whales, a mother and a calf ! We were lucky enough to see one Minke Whale breaching 3 times 🙂

The perfect whale watching trip from Reykjavik this morning!

The Glacier Snæfellsjökull shone brightly in the sun as we entered the bay Faxaflói. The Gannets were still diving at Akurey and a lot of Fulmars came flying by close enough to grab them.

We first spotted a single Minke whale but this one seemed to be in a hurry and quickly gave us the slip. We then sailed on to find a pod of White Beaked Dolphins that came right up to the boat at one point. the tour then ended with a Minke Whale Mother and her calf surfacing simultaneously again and again in front of us.

The beautiful Mountain View of Faxaflói was spectacular today with every Mountain clearly visible.

We started out finding two Harbour porpoises, but shy as they are they didn’t stop long by the boat. We then sailed on and saw the blow from a Minke whale, while we were waiting for that one to resurface big splashes were spotted in the distance. This turned out to be jumping Dolphins and we hurried towards them and watched them for a good while. We then turned to check on the Minke whale again and found two of them feeding close by.

A cloud then covered up the glacier and it was curtains for us on this beautiful day in Reykjavík.
