The winter weather was kind to us as we sailed towards the feeding grounds. Sailing was smooth as we past the islands of Engey and Viðey in search of whales. It became a bit more windy as we passed a large flock of birds further out into Faxabay. We searched far and wide when finally our work paid of when we suddenly spotted a large blow that resembled a small geyser. As we approached the location, the whale repeated blowing a high cloud of vapour into the air and we could see its back and dorsal fin, it was a Humpback whale. It was most likely the one we had been seeing close to Kollafjord these past days. It was now far away from the islands and the fjord near Reykavík but it seemed to be heading in the direction of mountain Esja, possibly back to the flock of birds we saw feeding before. We sailed slowly alongside it and it decreased its velocity and seemed to swim with us for awhile, even few times turning around to go closer to us.
It was a great whale watching tour with a beautiful encounter with a humpback that accompanied us for most of the way back home, home to the Reykjavíks Old harbour.
