Playful Dolphins In Wavy Waters

WHALE WATCHING CLASSIC

9:00

This morning, the sun was shining brightly, and the sea was typical Icelandic. But of course, this did not stop us! We braved the elements of Faxaflói bay, and we were ready for some wildlife. While searching for the whales, dolphins and porpoises, we saw some beautiful birdlife. We saw Arctic terns, northern fulmars and Atlantic puffins! The sight of the cute birds kept our spirits high while our search went on. In the distance we spotted something. It was a blow of a humpback whale! We saw several blows, before it went down for a deeper dive. Because this animal was taking quite a long dive, we kept our eyes peeled in all directions. Suddenly we something else! The jumps of white-beaked dolphins! We came quite close to them and they showed us some nice jumps. After some time with these animals, it was time to go back. On the way back we still could enjoy some morning sun.

Sailing out for our second tour on Lilja this day, expectations were high. A bit of a swell and sunshine should complete our adventure. Whilst being followed but Northern fulmars and some Arctic terns, a sudden blow interrupted the soundscape. A humpback whale surfaced right next to us. Even the pectoral fins were shining through the water surface. Getting the chance to actually observe this individual for a while, everyone could get some good pictures. As that wasn’t apparently enough, a curious minke whale showed up too. Since all our expectations were fulfilled – we happily sailed back towards the old harbour of Reykjavik.

RIB EXPRESS

The sea conditions looked fairly good in the harbour as we set sail for our first whale watching tour of the day. We started the tour by getting a good look at some beautiful Atlantic puffins in Akurey and then we made our way out into the bay. However, as we got further from the shore the wind began increasing and the waves grew in size as well. Because of the now rough conditions it became very difficult to spot the whales. We got brief looks at some minke whales and harbour porpoises but we did not manage to get a proper look at them. We decided that our passengers had not seen enough to our standards and we invited them all to come again for another whale watching tour on our larger boats.
