I’m not sure how many days in a row we have started this blog by saying how fantastic the weather was and im sure it´s starting to get repetitive by no….but the weather today was fantastic!! As soon as we got out of Reykjavik we were surrounded by birds, porpoises and Minke Whales! Literally every direction something was popping up to breath and nobody was sure exactly which direction to look as we were so spoilt for choice. After a while watching these beautiful whales we sailed on further out into the bay in search of something else and we were not disappointed. A humpback whale surfaced in amongst some birds and swam around right next to the boat giving everybody the best view. Well we were not finished there! In the distance we could see a dorsal fin and this was no small dorsal fin! this was the 6 ft tall dorsal fin of a male Orca Whale and its pod. They came right next to the boat and everybody was just stunned to see these majestic but powerful whales so close. But we still weren´t finished there. In the distance we could see another pod of Orca whales and the Humpback whale was still surfacing nearby too. So yet again passengers were spoilt for choice in which direction to look with two pods of Orca Whales to choose from and a humpback whale too. Lets not forget about the birds too which were feeding all around the boat on the krill at the surface including puffins, razorbills, gannets, fulmars and arctic terns! An unbelievable Whale Watching Trip out of Reykjavik with Special Tours today!

For the second express tour of the day we sailed straight out to where we had seen the humpback and Orca Whales earlier passing Whitebeaked dolphins and Minke Whales on the way. Yet again we found the same humpback whale feeding in amongst the krill giving the passengers a good idea of how this huge whale can consume up to 1.5 tonnes of food every day! After speeding around for 30 minutes looking for the Orca we spotted another blow and went to investigate. On our way to where we had seen that whale breath we came across more white beaked dolphins and then the huge humpback to which this blow belonged! Now this Humpback Whale was definitely full grown at almost 15 metres long and surfaced only a metre from the boat. Gliding like an underwater plane with its 5 metre long white pectoral fins (flippers). We then noticed that this humpback Whale was trailing the ropes from a fishing net which had cut into its tail and side. It was a great shame to see an animal entangled in some rope with visible scars from the struggle but luckily we could see that these scars were beginning to heal and infact this whale had plenty of blubber and had obviously been successfully feeding since this had happened. An amazing sight despite the ropes! What a great day whale watching from Reykjavik, Iceland!!
