The weather calmed down by quite a bit since yesterday, and so with renewed vigor we began our day aboard the Andrea. We sailed out from the Old Harbor in Reykjavík, and upon entering Faxaflói Bay we took advantage of the good visibility for our search. We sailed around for some time, until we found ourselves in an area with 3 minke whales! These baleen whales gave us a very nice show when they came up several times close to our boat. It was fun following them around, especially due to the wonderful bird life, including many northern gannets soaring around. Eventually we said goodbye to these whales and sailed around a bit more before making our way back to the harbor.

Sailing out into Iceland’s largest bay called Faxafloi, a huge flock of northern gannets indicated soon the presence of food within the feeding grounds. Whist still observing these incredible animals, which are also known as the “Queen of the Sea”, a big blow appeared right within the flock of birds. What could this be? A second blow showed up, and soon after a black dorsal fin and back appeared on the water surface. One of the common baleen whales, a minke whale, had made its way towards the boat. Surfacing for a couple times around 10m from the boat, everyone could get a good look and even listen to the breathing of the whale – amazing! However, more and more fins appeared around us, but a bit further in the distance. Seemed we’ve found the spot where the action was happening this morning.

Sightings: Minke whales
Leaving Reykjavik’s old harbour a second time with Rosin today, we headed straight towards the area where we got really lucky earlier this day, observing plenty of whales. Reaching these grounds the first blow appeared soon, indicating the presence of another minke whale. So we had to be a bit patient until the upper back and dorsal fin appeared, and everyone could get a good look on the minke. Within the next half an hour we shall get even more lucky, spotting 2-3 more minke whales around the boat, getting really close and displaying a typical feeding behaviour. What an amazing afternoon out on the ocean.
