It was a cloudy and slightly windy day in Reykjavik. Nevertheless, we started our Classic Whale watching tour into the largest bay of Iceland and we all were full of hope. Soon after entering the feeding area, we could spot some small splashes a bit in the distance, and while getting closer we could spot 3 white-beaked dolphins on a journey through the bay. We got lucky and could see their beautiful whitish pattern fur at least a bit before they rushed further out. Hence, we continued our sail and came across a small harbour porpoise that showed up a couple of times on the water surface. Always a delight to spot the smaller cetacean species out here in the bay.
While keeping our eyes peeled to the water surface we soon spotted a massive blow followed by a large black back on the water surface. We had found a humpback whale – amazing! This animal was an absolute lucky encounter since we could spot it numerous times surfacing very close to the boat so that we could even see the whitish pattern of its pectoral fins shining through the water surface, which made it very easy to follow the animal with our eyes.
What a great afternoon out here.
