Lady Aurora Woke Up Too Late

09.Feb 2022

The aurora forecast for tonight showed a KP index of 5 and a clear sky. So, of course, we were very excited about going out to chase the lights. When we left the harbor, some high clouds were covering the sky here and there, the cloud forecast had changed at the last minute and some clouds decided to join the party uninvited. We still had a clear view of the mountains around, and also of the moon and some stars. Once again the small islands north of Reykjavík were a great shelter from the freezing wind and the waves, so we could comfortably be outside, staring at the sky, waiting for the auroras. Unfortunately, that night not only some clouds were blocking the view, but aurora activity hadn’t started yet. Even though we knew a big quantity of solar wind had left the sun towards Earth, it is impossible to know when exactly and if they are going to show up above our heads. We came back to the harbor with only pictures of real clouds. I hope our passengers didn’t go to sleep immediately after the tour, because green northern lights finally appeared shortly after midnight. But since we couldn’t see them on our tour, everybody is welcome to join another tour with us for free anytime in the future.
