Reykjavik Whale Watching Diary 9th July 2014

Tour at 09:00

This cloudy morning  weather seemed quite nice and warm, fresh sea wind not rocking the boat too much. On our way to the whale watching area we were following funny coloured young gannets hunting the fish. We looked for the whales without a very good luck. We saw a spout of a whale from far away and went to see for a closer look, but this one didn’t want to show up to us again. Also a dorsal fin on a water surface of a travelling minke whale was seen from very close to a boat, but only once. Sometimes but very rare whales are shy to appear to us, so free tickets were given to the customers for a new tour.

The wind had slowed down a bit and the birdlife had picked up a lot. We saw lots of Gannets Diving after Sand-eels and Puffins were scattered all over the bay. We finally found Minke Whales that were in the Mood to be watched. First we followed one rather large animal and saw it surfacing quite many times. Then all of a sudden another one appeared right in front of the boat and headed in exactly the opposite direction. We took a U-turn and watched the other one for a good while.

The wind had slowed down even more as the evening closed in. Like a trained actor following its cue, a Harbour Porpoise popped up next to the boat as I was describing it to the guests. And being true to its name it did so just as we were sailing out of the harbour. We did not have to sail for very long before we found two Minke Whales, one of them was rather shy but the other one seemed very calm and we had the chance to follow it around for a good while. Then a bit later we came to a spot that was vibrating with life. Gannets were diving all over and White Beaked Dolphins from within five meters from the boat to as far as the eye could see. A grand-slam as far as I’m concerned 🙂
