Reykjavik Whale Watching Diary 28th August 2014

28.Aug 2014

Tour @9 am

Our morning was filled with jumping dolphins.

We went towards a big flock of birds and kept watching hoping to spot whales, and indeed we did. We found many white-beaked dolphins, and saw probably about 40 of them during the whale watching trip. Some of them were very interested in the boat and kept surfacing next to us, others amazed us with their breaching abilities. Toothed whales are always beautiful for our passengers to see, since they are so social animals.

In the distance we spotted a minke whale but kept on sailing until we saw a minke whale half-way home. We saw this animal very well a couple of times before leaving for Reykjavík.

Tour @10 am

We headed out into the bay on Rósin with plenty of excited passengers. After about a 15 minute trip to the usual feeding area, the guide climbed up on top of the wheelhouse and started scouting for whales.

Just a few minutes later we saw our first whale of the day, a very calm Minke whale. It spent a good time diving and swimming in circles, busy feeding on the plankton below the surface. After having spent a good time with it, we decided to leave it be and head further out. As luck had it, we stumbled upon a pod of White-beaked dolphins. After following them and watching them for a while, we also spotted a second Minke whale! What a trip. Turns out we were in the land of Arcadia, a magical land of whales. In this area, we were able to see a couple more Minke whales in the distance, and as time ran out and we headed back home, one surfaced right behind the boat. We were also lucky enough to spot the first Minke whale on the way back home.
It didn’t spoil the trip that the weather was great, wind was calm and the ocean flat. To summarize, it was a great tour.

Tour @1 pm

We had a wonderful afternoon whale watching with perfect conditions in Faxaflói-bay. The whales showed themselves really well as well. All in all we saw 3 different minke whales. The first one we spotted was quite elusive and kept to him/herself, the second however was amazing to watch. This animal swam towards our boat and surfaced literally right next to us, allowing us to her the breath. The minke often rolled over in the water while lunge feeding, causing quite a stir and we got to see the pectoral fins.

The third minke whale we spotted was considerably smaller in size, so perhaps a younger animal or a male minke whale.

All in all this was an amazing whale watching afternoon out of Reykjavík harbour.

Tour @5 pm

We had an amazing whale watching evening.

The sky was really beautiful and so were the whales. We saw first of all a minke whale which we followed around for a while. Later we saw different pods of white-beaked dolphins, one of which we saw for a very long time.

So all in all an exceptional whale watching trip from the capital of Iceland.
