Andrea departed from Reykjavik Old Harbour for a northern lights themed cruise in the Icelandic waters of Kollafjörður. We headed east toward Viðey Island, where we intended to find sheltered waters in order to gaze at the heavens while floating gently in the dark. On the way we glided past the Peace Tower, the tower of light beaming the remembrance of John Lennon right up into outer space. Tonight the Aurora forecast was strong. While we realized that a few unexpected clouds loomed above our heads, patches of clear sky allowed us to hope for proper sightings. In fact, a faint auroral glow was visible in the west since the very start of our endeavor. Eager to see the heavens brighten up, we took the matter into our own hands and tried to communicate with the spirit of Einar Ben, the man who controls the northern lights. Eventually it happened and the sky was illuminated above Mt. Esja. Our gladdened hearts cheered for the aurora while it intensified, while a joyful melancholy seized us sky gazers when the display finally faded and vanished. We later made our way back to civilization, all the while reminiscing about our night.
