Fantastic Humpback Sighting

15.Jan 2019

We took Andrea for our whale watching tour today and sailed through Kollafjörður. The weather was fabulous, everything was covered by a thin layer of snow. Close to the shore of Esja we spotted a humpback whale! The encounter started with us witnessing the whales feeding behavior and we got a great view into its mouth. It was the same individual we encountered during previous whale watching tours, which we can tell by the black pattern on the underside of its fluke. Since we had hardly any wind we could clearly see that the blow was coming out of the humpback whales two blow holes, something unique for baleen whales. We were just about to leave the whale when it breached close to our boat, this was a fantastic goodbye from the humpback whale today!
Before we returned back to the old harbor of Reykjavík, we sailed searching for some more cetacean species, enjoying today’s lovely scenery.
