WHALE WATCHING CLASSIC

9:00

What a beautiful morning the Old Harbour of Reykjavík! We had beautiful light, dramatic clouds and fantastic rainbows on the way to the feeding grounds of the whales. But the beautiful weather was not the only nice sight we had on this tour. The bay Faxaflói had some very nice minke whales for us this morning. Before we headed home we could make sure that everyone on board could see these friendly giants in their natural habitat.

The light conditions were still amazing, and we could not wait to see what is out there. And we could find some nice cetaceans below the beautifully coloured clouds. Our first sighting was a minke whale, but it behaved unlike any minke whale I have ever seen. It was surfacing many times and it had a white patch on the dorsal fin. But this was not the only individual we saw. A bit further out we could see a much larger individual, which was also coming pretty close to our boat Andrea. And this still was not the end of the tour! Before heading back, we could enjoy the company of some white-beaked dolphins! What a beautiful day in Faxaflói.

RIB EXPRESS

11:00

This morning we sailed into a slightly wavy Faxafloi, which with the rib boat means double fun! As we sailed towards the feeding grounds, we made encounter with a minke whale which was…well feeding! We observed it for a long while as it continued to surface really close to us, a repeated number of times. After a while observing this beauty we decided to continue our search. We didn’t have to sail far before we saw a sec0nd minke whale. This one, was a much larger individual, meaning it most probably was a female as they tend to be larger than males. On our way back we saw the dorsal fins of some white-beaked dolphins but, unfortunately, as we got closer we lost sight of them.

This afternoon the sea conditions were much better. There was just the right am9ount of swell for our passengers to have an amazing rollercoaster experience onboard our boat. Once we reached the feeding grounds of Faxafloi, we started observing at least 3 minke whales that were feeding all around us. This was a great experience, as we didn’t have to move a lot to be able to observe these beautiful creatures as they were constantly surfacing all around us. A couple of times, the whales surfaced so close to us that we were even able to hear them breathing! After a while observing these beautiful creatures, we saw some dorsal fins in the distance. We decided to go check them out, to see a small pod of white-beaked dolphins. It was really nice to observe them in their concentration whilst feeding. We stayed with these beautiful creatures until it was time for us to go back to Reykjavik.

WHALE WATCHING CLASSIC

9:00

The last couple of days we had quite rough weather conditions. We had lots of wind and waves, and we cancelled a lot of our tours for that reason. But today, the conditions were much better! We had sunshine and the waves had gotten a bit more quiet! We headed to Faxaflói bay in search for wildlife. After some time, we saw some diving northerns gannets, showing us that we were on the right track. Soon after, we spotted some blows in the distance. We headed in that direction, and we found out that there were some minke whales in the area. The large amount of fish in this area, apparently attracted a few of these gentle giants! We were able to observe them for quite a while, before we headed on. Some time later, we spotted some more minkes, and this time they came very close! When sailing back to the harbour we enjoyed the surroundings and the sun that was still shining.

Our afternoon Whale Watching tour was fantastic today! After a nice morning watching minke whales, we were eager to go out again to see what else the bay had in store for us. The sea surface was wonderfully calm, and our visibility was fantastic, making our search much easier. Our first encounter was with a few pods of harbor porpoises, and we could see these cute tiny toothed whales quite well thanks to the calm seas. We headed farther out and spotted some splashes under a flock of northern gannets diving into the sea. When we got closer, we could see it was a pod of 6 white-beaked dolphins! We followed alongside 2 of them for quite some time as they calmly swam towards the town of Akranes. After continuing on, we sailed into an area that can be described only as MINKE MADNESS – there were minke whales everywhere! It seemed that no matter which direction we looked in, a minke whale came to the surface, sometimes splashing as they fed on the fish around the area. At some points, they even came up extremely close to us – within only 25 meters! We were having such a great time, but we then had to say goodbye and make our way back to the harbor after an awesome adventure!

17:00

We left the harbour at 5 o´clock to start our search for the whales, dolphins and porpoises of Faxaflói bay. We sailed to the feeding grounds and enjoyed how beautiful the light was. We could see the peninsula Snæfellsnes and the glacier Snæfellsjökull very clearly. On our way, we already spotted some harbour porpoises! These tiny animals were close to our boat and it gave us good hope for the rest of the tour. It took us some time before we spotted our next species, but we could enjoy the beautiful surroundings during our search. At one point, it looked like a painting! Luckily, we did spot some other species: minke whales! We were able to spot several of these beautiful animals surface far and close! We were especially surprised when one minke suddenly surfaced very close to us! A very beautiful afternoon whale watch tour!

WHALE WATCHING EXPRESS

10:00

Heading out into Faxafloi, whilst the wind and waves eventually calmed down this morning, the first sighting appeared soon. A slender, fast travelling body became visible, showing its black dorsal fin. One of the common baleen whales, a minke whale, had made its way pass us. Waiting for it to surface again, we all shall get really surprised. The whales surfaced right in front of the boat, giving everyone the chance to see and listen to its blow perfectly. What a start of the tour. The minke showed up for a couple more times before it went down for a dive. However, we soon found another minke whales feeding in the bay. In order, to complete our fantastic tour this morning, we came across some feeding white-beaked dolphins, hunting together with around 20 northern gannets. What an incredible sight!!

RIB EXPRESS

11:00

11.00: We sailed out from the old harbor on a bright and sunny day. We sailed to the feeding grounds of the whales and soon a group of white beaked dolphins appeared to us. A family of at least 8 animals spent a good time around us, swimming and jumping close to us and we all got a good sight on those wonderful animals. We sailed on for a while looking for bigger animals and the luck was with us and a minke whale came into sight. The animal came up to breath several times close to our boat and we all got a good look at it. Speeding up in the sun was fun and we all arrived safe in harbor after great day at sea.

We sailed out from the harbor on a bright sunny afternoon. As soon as we arrived at the feeding grounds of the whales, the white beaked dolphins came into sight. Soon another big group surrounded us and soon we had a huge pods of white beaked dolphins all around us. We had at least 50 animals surrounding the boat, dolphins jumping, swimming around the boat, under the boat and cruising in front of us. Amazing sight. It was hard to leave the dolphins but we sailed on searching for other species. Soon, a minke whale came up the breath not too far away from us and soon more and more minke whales appeared. The big whales came up all around us to breath, close and far and in all directions. There where at least 4-5 animals around us. The gannets were fishing and diving all around us as well.  Wonderful sights and a great day at sea.
