With calm sea we headed out towards northwest. At the feeding ground of the whales, we found a large pod of white beaked dolphins, some of them jumped and one threw itself several times and created splashes.
We searched further, this time to the south west, and on the route to east, as we went through the south of bay, we found another large pod of white beaked dolphins.
Bright sun above us and Harbour porpoises swimming playfully along with Rósin. Out in the bay thousands of Arctic Terns fluttering and feasting on the feeding grounds, together with Gannets, Guillemots and Puffins. What a rich sea bird life!
A morning with our sea being smooth as a mirror, no wind and an unusual clear visibility. We shared a wonderful morning out in Faxaflói with several Minke whales and three different Harbour porpoises pods, that were uncommonly very friendly and curious.
Completely calm seas with Minke Whales, Harbour porpoises and white beaked dolphins!
Today, with almost a summer-like weather, we had beautiful sightings of seabirds. By the end of the tour we had very close sightings of a couple of Minke Whales and we could even smell their spout! Amazing! In the afternoon we were very lucky because we had a group of Harbor porpoises next to the boat. The tours today’s were amazing and we were very lucky !
This morning the wind remained from the same origin as yesterday but had increased quite a lot. This cause wave movement on the way out but some cover was gained from sailing closer to the mountains of Esja and Akrafjall. We searched that area well, as it can happen that the most fish species stay there during this weather and therefore also marine mammals, all the way towards the town of Akranes.
This morning we left the old harbour in Reykjavík, the course was set to the north east towards the feeding ground of the whales. We encountered fairly strong wind, and therefore also some wave movement, from the north east. As we arrived at the feeding ground of the whales, we experienced quite a lot of seabirds including some puffins. Some harbour porpoises came close to the ship, swimming close to the surface towards the ship.
The wind was hard in the morning but the weather changed during the day, it became a nice and sunny day. We had a full boat and everybody put on your fantastic warm overalls! Motoring out into the bay really was a lot of fun for everyone on board. Although the guide warned people that standing at the very front could get you wet when we were going fast, nobody seemed to mind and instead relished the Icelandic weather and seaspray. The variety of sea birds you can see feeding all at once in Faxafloi bay really is incredible! When we entered the feeding area of the whales we soon came across loads of diving birds including puffins, common guillemots, northern fulmars, arctic skuas, manx shearwaters, razorbills, kittiwakes and black backs gulls. We spotted several Minke whales, Harbor porpoises and White beaked dolphins during the tours. It was a sunny and funny day on the boats!!
