The morning presented a pretty rough sea with choppy dark waters, still a beautiful scenery in such a sunny bright day! The bravest passengers stayed out in the deck to feel the beats of the marine strong breeze and the warmth of the sun rays hitting our faces.
We sailed out in good conditions, and we were lucky enough to spot a pod of white beaked dolphins very close to the harbor! We watched them play for a while, and then headed further out, spotting four Minke whales out in the bay!
After about an hour of sailing we had seen plenty of seabirds, such as Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Arctic Terns and even some Puffins, and then we were lucky enough to spot a Minke whale.
The tour this morning was cancelled due to strong wind from the south east but around noon it had calmed down and sea movement was moderate. That made it possible for us to head out on today wildlife excursion on the bay of Faxaflói. As we came out, further to the west, we saw increasing seabird movement towards the south.
The howling wind and the waves made, from the start, an adventurous trip out into the bay! The bravest passengers enjoyed the movement of the boat and the breaking waves at the bow. The feeding grounds were crowded with birds feasting. We could see lots of Puffins, Gannets and Arctic Terns fishing.

Sunny day with white beaked dolphins
May 11th, 2015 / WHALE WATCHING
Tour @ 1pm
After we left the harbour, we were lucky enough to enjoy a big group of white beaked dolphins. We weren’t able to count them but it must have been a group of at least fifteen animals. They seemed to be happy to see us too and showed us some of their acrobatics. After more than 30 minutes we decided to change the place and see if we can find something else. We saw another group of dolphins on our way back.
Today started with a little snow but over the course of the day the sun came out and more of the coast around the bay was seen. First we found one minke and another one that threw itself slightly from the surface. This lead to finding of more minke whales that came close to the ship and clearly showed its entire head.
Today we headed out on the bay with slow wind, from the north east, and calm sea. The sun was shining as well which made for a wonderful trip 🙂 We encountered a minke whale which surfaces several times and a few times very close as well.
The sea angling tour started punctually with 10 passengers on board ready to become Icelandic fishermen during the evening. The ocean was calm and the captain headed us to the entrance of the Whale Fjord, as a potential good fishing spot. After throwing the first lines we started fishing the first atlantic cod pieces (Gadus morhua). Although it was cold and the marine breeze refreshed our faces, the excitement of these first catches enthusiastically uplifted all of us!
